Opening of the first phase of the new Sentara Albemarle Regional Health Campus located along the Halstead Boulevard Extended corridor in Elizabeth City was celebrated on Tuesday evening.

The first three practices located in the new 60,000 square foot Medical Office Building are family medicine, radiation oncology and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, which moved from the North Road Street campus last month.

A ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by the Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce was followed by tours of the new facility.

This was also the first public event for new Sentara Albemarle Medical Center President Teresa Watson, who began her duties on Monday.

Construction is already underway on an 88-bed hospital that will also be located on the 135-acre campus at the corner of Halstead Boulevard Extended and Thunder Road, with a projected cost of $200 million.

The new Sentara Albemarle Medical Center is slated to open in 2024, and will replace the current 60-year-old facility located on North Road Street, which Sentara purchased from Pasquotank County in 2014.

After the move to the new hospital, the county will retain ownership of the current hospital site and proceed with possible redevelopment.
