New benches coming to Jennette’s Pier over the winter

January 3rd, 2024

Some new additions will be coming for the New Year at Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head.

All 70 wooden benches on the 1,000-foot-long pier in the Whalebone section will be replaced this winter with Park Avenue benches made from recycled plastics.

The black and grey colored benches were customized when fabricated with an extra cross member on the back to highlight new cast bronze sponsorship plaques being produced to replace all the old Corian fish-shaped ones.

Jennette’s Pier Director Mike Remige said maintenance technicians Sammy Thornton and Roger Trimbach plan to install the Park Avenue benches one at a time.

“They will be installed as time permits,” Remige said. “An old one will be hauled away across the street and a new one brought back in the ‘Gator.’” Wooden blocks were added to elevate them for a better view over the handrail.

The ‘one at a time’ gradual replacement plan allows for the guys to replace old worn planks underneath the benches out on the 1,000-foot-long fishing platform.

The project promises to dress up Jennette’s Pier just in time for the spring bite and slew of community events taking place at the pier during its 14th season since reopening in May of 2011.
