Updated, Monday 11 a.m.: A portion of Halstead Boulevard Extended in Elizabeth City remains closed to all traffic as crews continue working to replace a railroad crossing.
Pasquotank-Camden Emergency Management reported Monday morning that the N.C. Department of Transportation said the reopening is being delayed due to logistical issues, and N.C. 344 will not reopen until the morning of Thursday, December 7, at the earliest.
The project started Friday morning between Hughes Boulevard and Fairground Road.
Periodic rain fell over the weekend, which likely hampered completing the project as previously scheduled.
Earlier story:
“The work is being performed by contractors for Norfolk Southern Railroad,” said N.C. Department of Transportation spokesperson Jamie Kritzer. “The complete closure is required due to the scope of the work and the size of the equipment being used to replace the crossing.”
Detours will be in place for passenger vehicles using Forest Park Road, while truck and commercial traffic is advised to only use the U.S. 17 Bypass.
