Groundbreaking took place Tuesday for a $3.2 million project that will construct an approximately 1.25 mile-long, 10 to 12-foot-wide paved multi-use pathway from the intersection of N.C. 12 and Lighthouse Road in Buxton to the Cape Hatteras Light Station and Old Lighthouse Beach Access.
Terra Site Constructors LLC of Front Royal, Virginia, will also fabricate educational exhibits at several locations, including along the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse move path.
Construction of the multi-use pathway is intended to improve visitor safety along the busy park road, and provide a direct walking and biking connection to the path that runs alongside N.C. 12 through the village of Buxton.
The project is being paid for in-part by direct contributions from Cape Hatteras Electrical Cooperative, the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau, REAL Watersports, Carolina Brewery and Vacasa, along with donations to Outer Banks Forever, the seashore’s non-profit support organization.
