Handel’s Messiah: A benefit concert for Dare County Youth Orchestra this Sunday

November 14th, 2023

The First Flight High School auditorium will come alive with the majestic sounds of Handel’s Messiah on Sunday, November 19, 2023, at 4pm. It promises to be an unforgettable musical experience, with all proceeds benefiting the Dare County Youth Orchestra.

The Dare County Youth Orchestra is a community-driven initiative dedicated to providing orchestral string instruction to students in Dare County.

The tradition of the Messiah concert, featuring the beloved Christmas portion, including the iconic “Hallelujah Chorus,” was begun by John Buford, Dare County’s Teacher of the Year. John is not only an exceptional educator but also a gifted musician and singer. He has been a beloved figure at First Flight High and Middle Schools and has significantly impacted the OBX community. This year’s concert is dedicated to honoring John, who is currently undergoing cancer treatment at Duke University Hospital.

Guiding this remarkable musical journey will be Dr. Robin Fountain, Emeritus Professor of Conducting at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music. Dr. Fountain’s leadership and expertise will undoubtedly elevate the Messiah program and performance to a new level of excellence.

The Messiah Concert is a wonderful way to start the holiday season, and we invite the entire community to join us. Admission to this extraordinary event is free, but we kindly request donations to support DCYO and its mission of enriching the lives of young musicians.

Please mark your calendars for November 19th and join us at the First Flight High School auditorium for an evening of sublime music, unity, and a celebration of John Buford’s enduring legacy. Your presence will not only enrich the cultural tapestry of the OBX but also support the musical aspirations of talented young individuals in Dare County.
