The McDonald’s in Kitty Hawk at the intersection of North Croatan Highway and Juniper Trail has been permanently closed by the local owner in what they call a “real estate decision”.
Elizabeth City-based Tandem, Inc. is the franchisee that operates McDonald’s locations across the Greater Outer Banks and southeastern Virginia.
The 2,655 square foot building was constructed in 1994 on a 53,000 square foot parcel at The Shoreside Center.
It was built during the fast food giant’s “express-style” era in the 1990s, when McDonald’s was opening locations with smaller menus in convenience stores and big box retailers, along with standalone locations that had limited seating areas.
Similar express-style McDonald’s opened around the same time in Currituck and Hertford.
A Tandem, Inc. official confirmed Tuesday was the last day of operations in Kitty Hawk, and they would be putting both the building and property on the market.
According to Dare County tax records, the total assessed value of the property is $1,674,700, and it is owned by “McDonald’s Real Estate Company of Columbia, Maryland”.
The tax record lists an Elizabeth City post office box, and is the same as the addresses for other companies listed as owners of the McDonald’s in Kill Devil Hills and Manteo.
The Tandem official said the decision to close had nothing to do with the store’s profitability or other factors, and that rumors circulating on social media were false.
