A long-time Currituck County employee has been appointed interim director of the newly-renamed Planning and Inspections Department.
Chief Building Inspector Bill Newns will serve as the department head until a full-time replacement is named. The position is currently being advertised by the Currituck County Human Resources Department.
A Currituck County employee since 2000, Newns’ appointment follows the Oct. 27 resignation of Kevin Kemp, who is leaving for another career opportunity, according to a statement.
Newns is married to Currituck County Emergency Management and Communications Director Mary Beth Newns.
In the same statement released Monday, Currituck County has also renamed the Development Services Department to Planning and Inspections “to better reflect the staff’s mission and responsibilities”.
The Planning and Inspections Department includes the areas of planning, zoning, building inspections, permits, and code enforcement. Staff members are located at the Historic Courthouse Complex on the mainland and the county office in Corolla.
