Builders and Shapers: Outer Banks Visitors Bureau “voluntourism” initiative

August 15th, 2023

Part of what makes the Outer Banks special is the large number of non-profits and the fine work these organizations do to protect and preserve the area.

Did you know that the Outer Banks has 100+ non-profit organizations serving our community of just 37,000 year-round residents? It’s a testament to the generosity of the locals and an expression of how much we all care for this special place.

If you love the OBX too, love it like a local and get involved with an Outer Banks non-profit through the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau’s voluntourism initiative.

It’s a great way to learn more about the culture, history and natural environment, and meet some cool people along the way.

Whether your interests are sea turtles and shelter animals, or shorelines and surfing, you’re sure to find like-minded people dedicating their time and energy to the cause.

You can also get closer to the beating heart of the OBX by working with locals who are lending a hand to others in need.

By getting involved with Outer Banks non-profits, you can turn a great vacation into a life-changing experience, for you and those you help.

Examples including pitching in on a beach clean-up, working a couple of hours at the local food bank or a non-profit historic attraction, or helping out at a local event which are often fundraisers that allow the non-profit to continue its work throughout the year.

In conjunction with the Outer Banks Community Foundation and the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau, “Builders and Shapers: Nonprofits for a Greater Outer Banks” is a weekly series featuring the nonprofits that serve our area. They share details about how they are working to make northeastern North Carolina and the Outer Banks a better place to live, work and play.
