Law enforcement agencies are advising businesses to be mindful of the cash they accept from customers, after a series of counterfeit $100 bills were recently used or attempted to be used in Nags Head and elsewhere.
The Nags Head Police Department shared several reminders about how to tell the difference between real and fake currency, including color-shifting ink, a watermark, blurry borders, printing or text and raised printing.
“Please take note: sometimes counterfeit markers do not work,” the department said in a Facebook post. “The bills will look like they have been washed.”They also shared photos of a suspect in one case, who reportedly tried to use the funny money at TJ Maxx, Nags Head Bowling and TW’s Bait and Tackle.
