The Winston-Salem Veterans Affairs Regional Office is inviting public participation at the Veterans Benefits Live, VA in My Town: Outer Banks event May 18, May 19, and May 20.
Any veteran or survivor interested in filing a claim for VA disability compensation—to include the new Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics (PACT) Act benefits— survivor’s pension, Veteran Readiness and Employment services, or needing assistance with an existing VA claim is encouraged to attend.
No appointments are necessary for this event which is open to all veterans. The event will take place at the Dare County Youth Center at Family Recreation Park—which is located at 602 Mustian St, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948—from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 18 and Friday, May 19, and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 20.
Representatives from the Winston-Salem VA Regional Office will meet face-to-face with Veterans and survivors to address questions and concerns. Attendees can file a claim for compensation, pension, or other VA related benefits, submit evidence, and speak to a VA claims processor about existing claims all in the same day.
In addition to information on VA disability claims process, experts will be on hand from the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) to assist with healthcare eligibility and enrollment, nursing support, suicide prevention and on Saturday, May 20, VHA clinicians will conduct on-site Toxic Exposure Screenings. Vet Center counselors will be onsite to assist with bereavement, military sexual trauma, substance abuse, and mental health screening.
Veterans are advised to bring their discharge papers (DD-214). Survivors who are interested in filing a claim are advised to bring both discharge papers and a death certificate.
