Runway rehab at Norfolk International Airport will limit overnight arrivals until at least November

April 18th, 2023

A runway rehabilitation project is now underway at Norfolk International Airport to repair aging asphalt and concrete portions of the primary air carrier Runway 05/23 that is scheduled to happen in two separate phases.

The work will limit overnight arrivals and temporarily shorten the main runway at the closest international airport to the Greater Outer Banks through at least the beginning of November.

Planning for this project has been underway for over a year with participation by the airlines and associated suppliers, according to a news release.

“All considerations have been made to minimize the impact to airline operations and passenger/cargo air service,” said Charles Braden Associate Vice President, Market Development. “Completion of this project will extend the life of the primary commercial Runway 05/23 by more than 20 years.”

Phase one of construction began on April 1 on Runway 23, and requires nighttime closures to all airline operations from 12:15 am to 5:15 a.m. through at least November 2. Notice to Air Missions (NOTAMs) are being regularly communicated.

Beginning May 18 and lasting through November 2, a temporary threshold relocation takes place, and the length of Runway 05/23 will be reduced to 6,800 feet.

Phase two of construction on Runway 05 is scheduled to being in March 2024 and last until November 2024.
