A former member of the Carolina Hurricanes NHL club and his wife are have teamed up to purchase an Outer Banks shop popular with locals and visitors alike.
Tomlinson and Associates, LLC and Brent Tomlinson announced the sale on February 28 of Tar Heel Trading Company located in The Scarborough Lane Shoppes, 1171 Duck Road, Suite B-7, in Duck to Liz and Jamie McBain.
“We are privileged to be carrying on Tar Heel Trading Company’s legacy of showcasing unique, one-of-a-kind creations by American artists and craftsmen,” said Liz, who grew up in Raleigh and spent summers with her family on the Outer Banks.

Jamie McBain, a native of Minnesota, was drafted by the Hurricanes in 2006. He played four seasons with Carolina from 2009-2013, then spent one season with the Buffalo Sabers, two with the Los Angeles Kings, and then retired in 2016-17 after a brief stint with the Arizona Coyotes.
Originally established in 1979 and at various locations on the Outer Banks, the store has been at the same location in the Scarborough Lane Shoppes since the center opened in 1995.
When Judy Joyce decided it was time to retire and spend more time wither her family, she contacted Brent Tomlinson for help in finding the right people to pass the store on to.
“Brent found the perfect new owners for Tar Heel Trading Company and made the transition easy with his guidance,” Joyce said. “Liz and Jamie are excited to carry on the business model we have perfected over the years, and I feel confident the shop will continue to be a favorite for locals and visitors for many years to come.”
