Fiber optic cable cut leads to communications outage on Hatteras, Ocracoke

March 14th, 2023

Crews from Brightspeed have been dispatched to repair a fiber optic cable that has been damaged, leading to a communications outage on Hatteras and Ocracoke islands.

The exact location of the cable cut was not released, but one source indicated it happened on Pea Island where crews from NCDOT have been shoring up dunes to protect N.C. 12 from high surf the last several days.

Phone, including 911 service, cellular, internet and other related platforms went out between 9 and 10 a.m. Tuesday.

During the outage, emergency personnel were placed at each of the volunteer fire department and EMS stations on Hatteras Island as a precaution, where residents and visitors can go if they have an emergency. Texting to 911 was also still working.

Repairs were made and service was restored to most customers just before 3 p.m.
