February 15th, 2023

UPDATED, Thursday 10 a.m.: The drainage pipe replacement project in front of Nags Head Town Hall is nearly complete and both northbound lanes of South Croatan Highway are open again.

Wednesday 4 p.m.: One northbound lane has now reopened at town hall. Drivers are advised that there is still a lot of road work in the area of town hall (5400 block) and south to about Gull Street near the outlets.

Increased traffic has also been reported on both U.S. 158 and the Beach Road due to the construction.

Additional single lane closures are taking place for curb ramp replacements, sidewalk repairs, and drainage installations, including at East Admiral Street, East Hollowell Street/Carolista Drive, and East Mall Drive.

Wednesday 10 a.m.: The southbound lanes of the Bypass at Nags Head Town Hall reopened to traffic at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, while northbound lanes are expected to reopen by the end of the week.

Crews have begun working on the replacement of a pipe running under U.S. 158 at Nags Head Town Hall which requires a full closure of South Croatan Highway, and all traffic is being diverted onto the Beach Road.

The southbound lanes of the Bypass are closed at East Epstein Street and the northbound lanes are closed at South Seachase Drive. All traffic is being detoured to South Virginia Dare Trail, with access to Town Hall is available from N.C. 12.

The Nags Head Police Department said one southbound lane may reopen to traffic as early as Tuesday afternoon.

Work has already been completed on replacing pipes at Baltic Street and West Oak Knoll ahead of resurfacing of U.S. 158 in Nags Head.

Milling of U.S. 158 continued Wednesday afternoon north of Whalebone Junction.

The milling and paving portion of the project got underway Monday in the Whalebone Junction area near the intersection of Gray Eagle Street and South Croatan Highway and proceeding northward.

Work will be phased with the first phase spanning between Gray Eagle Street and Town Hall. The second phase will likely span from Nags Head Town Hall to Jockey’s Ridge. Both phases are expected to be completed by mid-May.

The third phase is anticipated to occur this fall to finish the balance of South Croatan Highway up through to Eighth Street.

Engineers from the North Carolina Department of Transportation presented status updates on several projects in Nags Head during the town’s Board of Commissioners meeting on February 1, 2023.

Details were provided on the repaving and pipe replacement projects, and a proposed realignment of Gulfstream Street at Whalebone Junction.
