Artifacts will be on display and a special presentation will take place on Saturday at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site to honor the 161st anniversary of the Battle of Roanoke Island.
During the Civil War battle that took place on Feb. 7-8, 1861 on Roanoke Island, the Union army achieved its first successful assault on Confederate defenses. The short battle also featured the first amphibious landing under fire in U.S. Army history.
Between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., reproduction clothing and a selection of historic artifacts will be on display in the park’s visitor center. At 2 p.m., National Park Service Ranger Mike Zatarga will provide a special presentation about the battle.
