The 28th Annual TarWheel Cycling Event is set to spin through the beautiful northeastern North Carolina countrysides of Pasquotank and Perquimans Counties on Saturday, April 15, 2023.
The annual cycling event takes roadsters on a scenic, flat, countryside course through beautiful northeastern NC in Pasquotank & Perquimans Counties. Cyclists have the option of 33-, 62-, or 100-mile rides, at touring or fast-pace depending on their training/skill levels and ride preferences.
The TarWheel is a recreational ride event, not a timed race. The event brings cyclists from the mid-Atlantic region, as well as from across the country.
The rides start on the waterfront in downtown Elizabeth City at Dog Corner Park, 600 Southern Avenue with registration at 7:00 am, along with the famous Elizabeth City “Balls, Bacon, Bananas, and Brews” for startup energy.
The routes will take cyclists along the Elizabeth City and Hertford waterfronts and through the beautiful majestic rural communities, passing farmlands, pastures, barns, and historic homes.
Riders are likely to pass horses, cows, birds, turtles, and other wildlife and have the opportunity to view eastern North Carolina’s beautiful and amazing skylines.
This year’s ride will be in memory of Ed Taylor. Ed was a huge part of the area cycling community, led and organized the TarWheel event for years, and was president of the River City Cycling Club for many years.
Last year, on April 9th, as the 2022 TarWheel Cycling event was coming to a close and organizers were doing a final sweep of the course, word spread that Ed had passed away earlier in the day.
Regular TarWheel riders are familiar with the amazing SAG (Support and Gear) stops on the TarWheel circuit, replenishing their energies with famous devilled eggs, banana bread, smoothies, sweet potato biscuits, “sweet cycling crack,” PB and Js, local Barbeque and traditional proteins and snacks. All served in traditional southern hospitality style and all culminating in an end-of-ride picnic at Charles Creek Park. TarWheel riders don’t leave hungry!
Participants are invited to come early on Friday evening, April 14th for the Early Packet Pick-up at Pailin’s Alley (606 E. Colonial Avenue) and get a ticket for a free craft brew to be enjoyed at participating venues anytime over the weekend.
