Widening and drainage work at U.S. 158/Colington Road intersection to begin this week

February 1st, 2023

Work on widening and drainage upgrades at the intersection of U.S. 158 and Colington Road is scheduled to begin this week as part of the overall project taking place on one of the busiest secondary roads in North Carolina.

The State Board of Transportation awarded a nearly $20 million contract to the Fred Smith Company of Raleigh for the project that includes repaving, realignment of substandard curves, seven-foot wide paved shoulders to accommodate bicyclists and pedestrians, additional turn lanes and raised grades on flood-prone sections of the 4.3 mile-long road that started one year ago.

Traffic on Colington Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction from the U.S. 158 intersection to near Town Hall Drive, with work starting this week on the westbound side. A closure of the right turn lane onto Colington Road from US 158 may also be necessary.

The total time of this portion of the project is planned to run through the month of February.

“We have several phases of traffic control planned to lessen the impact to traffic,” said N.C. Department of Transportation spokesperson Tim Hass.

“We will maintain access in and out of Colington Road through all phases of the construction,” Hass said. “We also coordinated with our traffic services crew to monitor the traffic light timing for each phase and adjust as needed.”

Major roadwork along all of Colington Road is scheduled to be complete by this fall, with final completion of the project set for the spring of 2024.
