Demolition of part of the former Sentara medical building in Kitty Hawk is complete, with removal of concrete and debris ongoing ahead of construction for the town’s new police station.
The Town of Kitty Hawk closed on the $4.1 million purchase of the facility at 5200 North Croatan Highway in September 2022, which will allow the police department to relocate from the flood-prone headquarters on Kitty Hawk Road that previously served as the town’s post office.
Demolition of the old surgery center and portions of the north end began in early January.
The south end will remain medical use and the town is currently exploring options to reopen the medical portion of the facility.
Design schematic for the police headquarters is complete, and the town currently has an active Request for Qualifications to handle the next phase of the project, which will consist of construction document development, site planning and overseeing the contractor bidding process.
Interested firms must have recent experience in police station facilities design and construction, and the deadline to submit proposals is February 8 at 3 p.m.
