Here’s the run down on local government closures and schedule changes in northeastern North Carolina and on the Outer Banks for Christmas and New Year’s Day.
Dare County
All Dare County offices will be closed on Friday, December 23, 2022; Saturday, December 24, 2022; Monday, December 26, 2022; and Tuesday, December 27, 2022 in observance of the Christmas holiday, and Monday January 2, 2023 for the New Year’s Day holiday.
The Dare County C&D Landfill, Buxton Transfer Station and Manteo Recycle Yard will be closed on Friday, December 23, 2022; Saturday, December 24, 2022; and Monday, December 26, 2022 in observance of the Christmas holiday. These sites will reopen on Tuesday, December 27, 2022. They will also be closed Monday January 2, 2023 for New Year’s.
Dare County Public Works—which provides trash collection for the unincorporated areas of the county as well as the Town of Kitty Hawk—has announced its revised collection schedule in observance of the 2022 Christmas and New Year’s holidays as follows.
The Week Before Christmas
There will be one residential pickup per area during the week of Christmas, which runs Monday, December 19, 2022 through Friday, December 23, 2022, as follows:
- Monday, December 19, 2022: Kitty Hawk, Colington, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras
- Tuesday, December 20, 2022: Manteo, Wanchese, East Lake, Manns Harbor, Stumpy Point, Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo and Avon
- Wednesday, December 21, 2022: No trash collection.
- Thursday, December 22, 2022: No trash collection.
- Friday, December 23, 2022: Closed – No trash collection.
Commercial trash collection will take place on Monday, December 19, 2022 and Thursday, December 22, 2022. Normal commercial trash collection will resume on Tuesday, December 27, 2022.
The Week After Christmas
Residential trash collection for the week of Monday, December 26, 2022 through Friday, December 30, 2022 will be as follows:
- Monday, December 26, 2022: Closed – No trash collection.
- Tuesday, December 27, 2022: Kitty Hawk, Colington, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras

During the holiday weeks, residential collection of recyclables by Bay Disposal will be made on normal recyclable collection days; Mondays for the East Side and Tuesdays for the West Side.
