Outer Banks artist James Melvin created a portrait of Civil Rights icon Ruby Bridges overlooking the ocean that is now on display in the Capt. Richard Etheridge Lobby at the College of the Albemarle-Dare County campus in Manteo.
On Friday, COA President Jack Bagwell, Dean Tim Sweeny and Joan L. Collins of the Pea Island Preservation Society explained the significance of the painting.
Ruby has requested the work of art be displayed publicly on the Outer Banks, and planning is underway for future locations.
