Here’s the run down on local government closures and schedule changes in northeastern North Carolina and on the Outer Banks for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Dare County
All Dare County offices will be closed on Thursday, November 24, 2022, and Friday, November 25, 2022, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.
The Dare County C&D Landfill in Manns Harbor, the Buxton Transfer Station and the Manteo Recycle Yard will also be closed on Thursday, November 24, 2022, and Friday, November 25, 2022, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. These sites will reopen on Saturday, November 26, 2022.
The Dare County Public Works Department, which provides trash collection for the unincorporated areas of Dare County as well as the Town of Kitty Hawk, has announced a revised collection schedule.
There will be one residential pickup per area during the week of Thanksgiving, which runs from Monday, November 21, 2022, through Friday, November 25, 2022.
Residential trash collection for the week of Monday, November 21, 2022, through Friday, November 25, 2022, will be as follows:
- Monday, November 21, 2022: Kitty Hawk, Colington, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras. Trash collection will resume on Monday, November 28, 2022.
- Tuesday, November 22, 2022: Manteo, Wanchese, Manns Harbor, East Lake, Stumpy Point, Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo and Avon. Trash collection will resume on Tuesday, November 29, 2022.
- Wednesday, November 23, 2022: No residential trash collection.
- Thursday, November 24, 2022: Closed – No trash collection. Happy Thanksgiving!
- Friday, November 25, 2022: Closed – No trash collection.
Commercial trash collection will take place on Monday, November 21, 2022, and Wednesday, November 23, 2022. Commercial trash collection will resume on Monday, November 28, 2022.

Nags Head
- All Town administrative offices will be closed on Thursday and Friday, November 24 and 25, 2022.
Sanitation Schedule
- There is no change to the green trash route’s collection schedule.
- Thursday, November 24 – There will be no trash collection on the Town’s blue trash route and the bulk/brush collection yard will be closed
- Friday, November 25 – Both the blue and green trash routes will be collected and commercial trash will also be picked up.
Kill Devil Hills
Kitty Hawk
Residential trash pickup will ONLY be on Monday, Nov. 21, 2022. Commercial pickup will be Mon. and Wed., Nov. 21 and 23, 2022.
Also, the town administrative offices will be closed on Thursday and Friday, November 24 and 25, 2022.
Southern Shores
Town Hall Offices will be closed for Thanksgiving Thurs. & Fri. Nov. 24th & 25th. *No change to Friday Recycling Collection*
Duck
Town offices will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 24 and Friday, Nov. 25.
Currituck County
County offices will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 24 and Friday, Nov. 25. Trash/recycling centers will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 24.
Elizabeth City
City offices will be closed on Thursday, November 24th and Friday, November 25th in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.
