Barrier Island Bagels celebrates first anniversary of new owners and new location

November 11th, 2022

It looked like the Outer Banks was going to lose a favorite eatery among locals and visitors alike in the summer of 2021.

After Barrier Island Bagels’ founders Allison Mayo and Josh Legg learned their shop at The Marketplace in Southern Shores was destined for the wrecking ball, the couple decided to close the doors and put the equipment up for sale.

But along came Kallie and Robert Largent, who had just moved from Maryland to Southern Shores that July.

Not only did the Largents decide to make their favorite breakfast spot their own, they discovered Argyles Restaurant along U.S. 158 at milepost 2 in Kitty Hawk was also becoming available.

And it just so happens the couple held their wedding reception 10 years earlier at Argyles.

So in the same month they made the Outer Banks their home, they bought both restaurants.

After renovating the building, and adding a number of favorites from Argyles to the menu, the reborn Barrier Island Bagels opened its doors to rave reviews at 4716 North Croatan Highway for breakfast and lunch last fall.

To celebrate the first anniversary, the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce and Ribbon Cutting Sponsor, ACE Hardware, held a ribbon cutting on November 3.

Richard Hess, Immediate Past Chairman and Realtor at Sun Realty congratulated the Largents on their success during the ceremony.
