Election 2022: U.S. Senate, Congress, General Assembly results in northeast N.C./Outer Banks

November 8th, 2022

Republicans have regained their super majority in the North Carolina State Senate, but finished just short of gaining a veto-proof majority in the State House in Tuesday’s midterm general election.

Sen. Bobby Hanig of Currituck County was one of the key victories giving the GOP a three-fifths majority in the Senate.

But with the House remaining one seat short of a supermajority for the Republicans, Democratic Governor Roy Cooper will still have the ability to turn back legislation passed by the General Assembly in his final two years.

Republicans maintained their hold on the two U.S. Senate seats with a victory by Ted Budd. North Carolina’s delegation in the U.S. House will be evenly split with seven Republicans and seven Democrats.

However, the House districts will have to be redrawn before the 2024 election by the Republican-controlled legislature.

The GOP also picked up the majority in the state Supreme Court through 2028 by taking both seats on the ballot Tuesday, and swept the state Court of Appeals races.

Turnout statewide was 50.53 percent, with 3,745,547 ballots cast as of Wednesday morning. Mail-in absentee ballots must be received by Friday at 5 p.m., so those numbers are expected to increase.

All results are unofficial until each county conducts their canvass next week and certifies the results.
