Outer Banks Hotline will again host Ribbon on the Ridge on Purple Thursday, October 20, at 10 a.m. on Jockey’s Ridge in Nags Head to increase awareness about domestic violence right here on the Outer Banks.
Ribbon on the Ridge began in 2014 but the event was paused during the pandemic. This year, as in previous years, a 150-foot ribbon will be unfurled on the ridge and held by Hotline team members and Outer Banks community members as a reading of names is performed to honor those who have lost their lives to domestic violence in our state this year.
Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behaviors used to gain or maintain power and control over a partner and is the leading cause of injury to women in the US. It is often delivered along with verbal, emotional, and/or economic abuse. Individuals of any race, age, gender, sexuality, religion, education level or economic status can be a victim or perpetrator.
“We’re calling on our community members to come out and support Ribbon on the Ridge, a unique and meaningful symbol of our commitment to end domestic violence on the Outer Banks,” said Bronwyn Thornton, executive director of Outer Banks Hotline.
The Hotline team also encourages everyone to wear purple on October 20 and post pictures of themselves and others on their social platforms to increase awareness and demonstrate their support of the victims and survivors of this social epidemic.

Established in 1980, Outer Banks Hotline is a private non-profit direct human services organization providing residents and visitors of the Outer Banks with crisis intervention and prevention services, safe housing, information, education and advocacy to domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking survivors. Hotline operates a safe house along with five thrift stores from Kitty Hawk to Buxton.
