Demolition of downtown Manteo building begins this week

UPDATED, Tuesday 10 p.m.: Delivery of an excavator for the demolition of the old Evans Building been delayed until Wednesday morning.

There will be a temporary road closure on Agona and Fernando Streets while the equipment is unloaded.

The Manteo Police Department will remain on site during this time and after to help ensure the truck is able to depart the downtown area in a safe manner.

EARLIER STORY:
Demolition is scheduled to begin later this week of a downtown Manteo building.

According to an email from the Town of Manteo, the former Evans Building located at the corner of Sir Walter and Old Tom streets will be torn down.

It is located across from Ortegaz, and the back of the property faces the Roanoke Island Maritime Museum and Boat House.

Site work is scheduled to take up to 7 to 10 days to complete, barring any weather or other unforeseen delays.

During the demolition, Old Tom Street will be closed, so no parking will be allowed.

The town will have barricades in place along with notices on site and on cars parked in the area. Construction fences have also been erected around the site.
