A new dune walkover is now open at the Dolphin Street beach access in the Whalehead section of Corolla, after Currituck County conducted a final safety inspection on Thursday.
The county said construction continues for the new walkover at Coral Street, which is expected to be finished by the end of the month. The projects that started earlier this year have been held up due to delays in getting materials.
Currituck County is in the middle of replacing a dozen aging dune walkovers in Corolla. Phase one was completed in 2021, with new dune walkovers built at Barracuda, Perch, and Sailfish streets.
During the winter of 2022-2023, new walkovers will be constructed at Bonito, Marlin, and Sturgeon streets. The project’s final phase will include the replacement of walkovers at Herring, Shad, and Tuna streets during the winter of 2023-2024.
