UPDATED: N.C. 12 reopens in Southern Shores 12 hours after water main break

July 21st, 2022

UPDATE, 7:30 p.m.:
Repairs to N.C. 12 in Southern Shores have been completed, and the road has reopened to traffic.

6:30 p.m.: Reopening N.C. 12 has been delayed due thunderstorms moving through the area this evening.

An estimated time for reopening is not yet known.

3:30 p.m.: N.C. 12 remains closed to traffic in Southern Shores due to an earlier water main break at the Triangle Intersection.

Crews have repaired the line, but the extent of the work required digging several feet below the roadway and Ocean Boulevard between U.S. 158 and East Dogwood Trail.

Traffic is being rerouted through the narrow streets of Southern Shores on South and East Dogwood, and drivers should expect delays traveling to-and-from Duck and Corolla.

The break has caused low-to-no water pressure for customers of the water system serving Southern Shores, Martins Point and Duck.

Customers are asked to conserve water so elevated tanks can be refilled quickly, but no other advisories have been issued this morning and the water is safe to drink.

Photos from this afternoon show the extent of the repairs:
