Buxton beach nourishment paused for repairs, refueling of dredge

July 19th, 2022

Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Co. announced Tuesday morning that beach nourishment operations in Buxton were temporarily paused last night, as the dredge Ellis Island departed Dare County to head to Norfolk for repairs, maintenance and refueling.

The contractor has not yet provided an estimate of repair time and the dredge’s schedule, according to a news release from Dare County.

The delay is not expected to slow work that is about to wrap up along Avon, which is being conducted by the Dredge Liberty Island.

On Monday, pumping continued to proceed south along the Avon oceanfront fronting Ocean View Drive. Construction will continue to progress south to tie in with the nourished section of the beach near Pampas Drive to complete the final approximately 2,200 feet of the Avon beach nourishment project.

It is not yet known if the Ellis Island repairs would potentially impact the schedule of Great Lakes Dock and Dredge Company’s next project along South Nags Head slated to begin by the end of the month.
