Nags Head’s Planning Board reviewed on Tuesday an initial sketch plan for a proposed four-story, 90-room hotel to be located on the west side of U.S. 158 just south of Nags Head Golf Links.
The name of the developer for The Inn at Whalebone was not disclosed in the sketch plan prepared by House Engineering, P.C., of Kitty Hawk.

It would be the first large-scale hotel constructed in Nags Head since the current Holiday Inn Express was erected on the oceanfront in 1987.
The property is located near the corner of South Croatan Highway and Lakeside Drive, behind the Duck-Thru convenience store, and is owned by Stanford and Susan White.
It is also adjacent to The Soundside event site, where the Dare County Tourism Board has proposed the 49,000 square foot Outer Banks Event Center.

The purpose of Tuesday’s presentation was to hear early feedback from the planning board about the proposal before developers submit a more detailed plan to the town’s planning department.
That site plan will then undergo further reviews by town staff, followed by the planning board.
